Messenger of Allāh ﷺ said: "...so he (Adam) said: ‘O Lord! Who is this?’ He said: ‘This is a man from the latter nations of your offspring called Dawud.’ He said: ‘Lord! How long did You make his lifespan?’ He said: ‘Sixty years.’ He said: ‘O Lord! Add forty years from my life to his.’ So at the end of Ādam’s life, the Angel of death of came to him, and he said: ‘Do I not have forty years remaining?’ He said: ‘Did you not give them to your son Dawud?'” He said: “Ādam denied, so his offspring denied, and Ādam forgot and his offspring forgot, and Ādam erred, so his offspring erred.”e said: "O Adam! Dwell you and your wife in the Paradise and eat both of you freely with pleasure and delight of things therein as wherever you will, but come not near this tree or you both will be of the Zalimun (wrong-doers)." [At-Tirmidhee no. 3356]
When the angel of death approached Adam , before the time of what he thought was decreed for him, age 1000, he was surprised as he had 40 years of his life remaining. Adam
disputed this, wishing to live longer.
The angels reminded Adam that he had gifted prophet Dawood some years of his life which he had forgotten and denied. Upon this, Allah showed him proof of his request to take life from his own and to add it to prophet Dawood’s lifespan.
Adam's request was for Prophet Dawood's lifespan to be completed for 100 years. Allah reminded him of this, which was also witnessed by the angels.
From the favours, bounty and generosity of Allah, Allah extended Adam’s lifespan by keeping the original age of 1000 years old and granted Dawud
the increment to live to 100 years old.
Later, as Adam fell ill, he sent his children to fetch fruits from paradise.
On their journey, they encountered angels carrying their father's burial shroud, fragrant substance and tools and measurements for digging.
The Angels instructed his children to return as their father’s end was near.
When the angels met Adam , Hawwa recognised the signs and held onto him.
The angels made preparation for Adam’s death. They removed his soul, washed, shrouded his body, embalmed him, performed the funeral prayer and buried him, filling and covering his grave with earth.
The Angels stated to the sons of Adam that this would be the tradition of burying the dead.
Adam passed away on the day of Jumu’ah (Friday).
